Die Repair Technician

Metal presses are machine tools which are used to shear, blank, perforate, form, bend, and draw sheet metal in order to manufacture components such as brackets, hinges, lugs, handles, hangers, fenders, frames, and panels. The operations are performed using tooling called dies, which are mounted into the press.

During use, the dies are subject to wear and damage. The Die Repair Technician removes the die from the press and examines the various components of the die, including punches, die blocks, guide rails, feeders, stops, ejectors, knockouts, strippers, springs, inserts, locators and pilots, for visible wear and damage. Using information gained by examination of product made by the die, determines areas of the die in need of repair, replacement, adjustment or sharpening, and performs the necessary corrective work.

The Die Repair Technician must have knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Blueprint Reading
  • Inspection and Precision Measurement techniques
  • Math
  • Communications
  • Safety Practices
  • Materials
  • Use of Hand Tools
  • Operation of precision machine tools such as the lathe, milling machine, and surface grinder
